A Good Civil War 1852 Presentation Foot Officer’s Sword To Lieutenant Alfred J. Hall Of Company A Lowell The Lowell City Guards.

36 and 3/4 inch frost etched blade. The blade stamped “Collins & Co. Hartford, Conn 1862” Etched with foliage and large “U.S.” The right side with a large American eagle amidst foliage. The blade in nearly mint condition with brilliant frost etched panels and bright as it was 150+ years ago.

The hilt retaining much brilliant bright gilding, pierced with foliage. Fishskin grip wrapped with twisted brass wire in very fine condition. The scabbard with shape with wear to gilding. The middle mount with large engraved Union shield and 40% gilding. The elaborate locked with “U.S.” spears and foliage.

The presentation inscription reads ”Presented to Lieutenant A/J/ Hall by the members of the Lowell City Guards August 24th 1860" which looks like 1870 only the 7 has a long bottom stroke that eliminates it as a 7 and more like a 0. The 1862 date on the blade conflicts with the date of the presentation and the record of Lieutenant Hall in the Lowell City Guards as recorded on page 91 of the “History of Middlesex County.

The leather scabbard is good overall with much original lustrous finish though cracked and repaired with electrical tape just behind the shape.

This is a very fine condition Civil War presentation sword with a blade as pristine as one could wish for.
