A Rare Steel Inlaid Late 17th Century Spanish Ripoll Miquelet Lock Holster Pistol By Rovira (Ruira) 1675-1702.
11 and 3/8 inch Spanish form octagonal to round barrel sparsely engraved with vines at breech. Finely formed Spanish ‘patilia’ form lock with finely fluted hammer and pan. The frizzen face finely engraved with deeply struck maker’s mark “ROVIRA”. Steel triggerguard. Spurred steel buttcap sparsely engraved, with grotesque mask pommel. Elaborate pierced and engraved sideplate reminiscent of Brescian steel lacework holster pistol. Fine shaped steel belt hook.
A large pierced and engraved steel panel featuring a double headed eagle. Walnut full stock. Condition of barrel with wear and some old pitting. Lock is very good. The pierced steel panels are good with clear engraving. Stock with wear and some old repairs including a splice to fore-end 6 and 1/2 inches from muzzle but wood appears to be matching as there is raised carving along the ramrod channel. Turned steel thimbles. Action functions well on half and full cock with powerful mainspring. Bore is fair.
This is a very rare and unusually large (18 inches overall) showy Ripoll miquelet pistol by one of the premier Ripoll makers.
