An All Steel Ramshorn Butt American Revolutionary Period Scottish Highland Officer’s Flintlock Military Belt Pistol Circa 1770. 

8 inch round barrel with raised breech forming a rear sight. 54 caliber, The barrel decorated with turnings throughout its length. Plain line engraved lock with gooseneck cock ensuite. Classic all steel Scottish rams horn stock with steel belt hook. Ball trigger matches ball pricker. All steel parts except cock are decorated with minute punches in patterns. Condition overall is smooth gray steel with minor wear. Mainspring is strong but pistol will not cock. Steel ramrod appears to be the original.

Pistols of this type were carried by British troops throughout the American Revolution. General George Washington gave a pair to the Marquis de Lafayette, which remain with the Lafayette family. A particularly fine pair belonging to British Major Pitcarin lost by him on the retreat from Concord to Boston are on display at the Lexington Historical Society.

Genuine all steel Scottish pistols are becoming very scarce and are a must for both the Revolutionary War collector as well as the Scottish collector.
