Stock No:004875

An Extremely Rare And Highly Sought After Genuine Period Etched And Gilt Italian High Comb Morion Circa 1585.

This is a true gem for the serious collector of Renaissance armour. Weighing 3 pounds six ounces the skull of one piece, the high comb a full 3 and 1/2 inches high. The etching of very fine execution depicting angels, helmeted warriors, and mythological figures within banded panels.

The significant factor that ensures that the etching on this lovely headpiece is of the Renaissance period rather than a later Victorian enhancement is that the unclothed figures are anatomically correct. Etching and indeed most art of the Victorian period does not illustrate male genitalia as it was prohibited.

The comb is finely roped and shows period repairs as is commonly the case with genuine high comb morions. Nine beautiful lining rivets adorn both sides of the helmet. The form of the morion is particularly elegant with the peaks rising to a point complimenting the beauty of the high comb. The brim is finely roped and surrounds a masterfully forged shallow border.

The interior of the helmet is deeply patinated and untouched with all the marks from the master armorer’s hammer one wants to see. This is the only gilt, etched and decorated Renaissance helmet it has been our privilege to own and now offer to our most discerning aficionados of the art of the Renaissance armorer.
