A Extremely Rare And Desirable German “Katzbalger” Broadsword Most Likely First Half Of The 16th Century Circa 1540.
The 22 and 3/8th inch blade is 1 and 3/4 inches wide at ricasso. The blade with single fuller extending 8 inches with a well worn “Running Wolf” mark on right flat.
Characteristic recurved well forged quillion. Ancient leather covered waisted wood grip. Domed iron pommel. Condition of blade showing wear and great age. Quillion showing great age and skillful forging. Leather covered grip deteriorated with age. Pommel is good and sword has not been dismounted in more than a century.
28 and 1/2 inches overall. Swords of this type are preserved in the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna, the Kienbusch Collection in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Historiches Museum in Dresden. A fine katzbalger with scabbard was sold at Bonhams, Knightsbridge in November of 2014 for $26,250.
