A Fine And Rare English Flintlock Carbine Blunderbuss/Coach Gun With Under Mounted Spring Bayonet By Blair & Lea, Navigation Street, Birmingham Circa 1784.
19 and 3/4 inch barrel. 1 inch bore. The steel barrel of “Spanish” form with “wedding band” separating the round portion from the octagonal breech. The entire barrel with fine Damascus brown of unusually attractive pattern, Gunmaker’s proof at breech. Lightly engraved breech tang.
Fine stepped bolted, line border engraved lock with line engraved swan neck cock, bridled frizzen signed “Blair & Lea". Engraved brass triggerguard and buttplate. Engraved fore-end mount houses the long fluted 7 and 3/4 inch triangular bayonet. Highly figured walnut half stock with fine shell carving behind breech tang.
Barrel exhibits 95% lovely Damascus brown finish. Lock is crisp, bright clean steel. Bayonet snaps out with force. Mounts are very good overall. Beautiful walnut stock retains much original varnish with minor marks. Nicely engraved vacant brass thumb piece. Lock action is crisp on both half and full cock. Bore is fair.
This is a most unusual and attractive blunderbuss carbine suitable for any late 18th English gentleman’s coach and will fill a gap in any collection of blunderbusses.
