A Rare And Early English Flintlock Sporting Carbine By William Turvey, London, 1711-1748 Converted To Pill-Lock In The 19th Century.

22 and 3/4 inch round barrel with pronounced swelled muzzle. 90 caliber bore. Barrel signed in a reserve “W. TURVEY LONDON”. Engraved breech tang. Engraved brass mounts. Turned ramrod pipes characteristic of early 18th century English guns by quality makers of which Turvey is a well known member of that august company.

The lock is plain but the pill container is finely engraved in the English style. Barrel is properly proofed and also punched with “WT” William Turvey’s personal proofmark. Solid brass sideuplate is finely engraved. Figured walnut fullstock is in fine condition throughout. Ramrod is short but fits well.

Action is very crisp on both full and half cock. The bore is fine for a carbine of this period. Altogether a most interesting sporting carbine by one of England’s most celebrated early 18th century makers.
