A Fine And Long Shin Shinto Japanese Samurai Sword Tachi In Period Austere Iron Handachi (Half tachi) Mounts Circa 1830.

The 29 and 7/8ths inch (cutting edge) blade with suguha midare hamon with itame hada. The ha is very bright with pronounced ji-nie. The blade is nearly full old very bright sashikomi polish with no kizu or edge chips.

Fine silver “Cat scratched” habaki. Nakago is ubu with one mekugi-ana. Four character signature appears to comprise “Masatsugu??). Fine old iron tsuba with thick roped rim, a real samurai style guard. Long and old samurai mounted tsuka with plain shibui iron fuchi kashira bound in blue tsuka-makie. Large iron rain dragon menuki with gilt eyes further enhance the handle. Hadachi mounted saya of black ishime lacquered wood.

The iron handachi mounts exemplify the samurai’s essence of shibui (restrained, quiet, elegance). Condition of mounts is excellent with wonderful patination.

This is an exceptionally attractive long samurai sword in mounts that would do credit to any true 19th century samurai. Highly recommended to our Japanese sword aficionados
