A Good Early Continental European Transitional Rapier Circa 1640 With Chiseled And Pierced Double Shell Guard.

32 and 1/2 inch double edged blade with finely engraved foliate etched decoration and French (?) sayings, The double shell guard is chiseled with reserves which are finely pierced. Double ring hilt with the vestigial recurved quillions common to transitional rapiers, which are the offspring of the swept hilt rapier and the progenitor of the small sword. Bog oak grip with wire and “Turk’s Heads” missing. Fluted ovoid steel pommel.

Condition of steel components is patinated but rapier is tight and appears to be homogenous. 38 inches overall. Transitional rapiers are important to both collectors of 17th and 18th century European swords as they bridge the years of gentlemen wearing true long rapiers and the small sword which was a must for any gentleman.

This is a good example of the type and will please any sword aficionado.
