An Attractively Mounted Japanese Samurai Sword Wakizashi Shin Shinto Circa 1785.
15 and 1/4 inch cutting edge shinogi tsukuri blade. Midare temper. Beautiful silver wrapped habaki. Unsigned tang with good patination and one hole.
Handle with lovely shakudo fuchi kashira carved in relief with a ho-ho bird amidst scrolls. Fine quality shakudo menuki with ho-ho bird ensuite. Ishime black lacquer saya with kurikata. Kozuka in shakudo nanako with gamboling horses and gold highlights. Condition of blade is in good state of polish.
Handle mounts are excellent though old golden silk wrap is tender as ancient tsuka-makie tends to be. Saya lacquer is fun. Kozuka shows wear but good detail. The handle mounts are a 7 on a 10 scale for this type of work. Round iron tsuba with raised relief priest with water buffalo in skakudo and gold.
Altogether a most attractive samurai sword.
